Whale Watching: With 20 years of experience, Futurismo is, in the Azores, the Pioneer in the observation of cetaceans. We organize daily trips, year round, that last approximately 3 hours. Before the trip, there is always a brief presentation made by one of our guides that recounts the history of whale-hunting and its evolution to observation of cetaceans to our clients. Also provided is information concerning the biodiversity of the islands, rules of conduct with the animals and safety on board the boat.
Swimming with Dolphins: Swimming with dolphins is a wonderful way to visit these animals in their natural habitat. Upon entering the water appropriately equipped with a wetsuit and a diving mask, you will be amazed by the dolphins swimming around you, with the opportunity to come very close to them, maybe even allowing you to hear them. It is, without a doubt, an experience you will not forget! Learn more about the different species, lose yourself in the blue ocean and re-find yourself with this rejuvenating experience.
Hiking Trails Half Day:
Baía das Canas Trail: This route starts with the discovery of the beautiful Parque Florestal de Prainha, with Baía de Canas as the most interesting point, with a 369 step climb carved in the cliff and where the microclimate makes the atmosphere unique and perfect to relax, ponder over the amazing landscapes, and take a dip in the limpid waters of the bay. Throughout the course of the trail, it is possible to observe indigenous species, namely the Picconia azorica and the Juniperus brevifolia.
Ribeira Nova Trail: This trail that takes place in Sant´ana, in the parish of Santo António, gets its name because at one point on the trail, we will find a hole… Throughout the course of the trail, it is possible to observe indigenous species, migratory birds, old, abandoned houses, vineyards, and cultivated fields. The Ribeira Nova (New Stream) characterizes this trail (only if it forms with high quantities of precipitation), as it is the only to begin at the foot of the mountain and it accompanies a great part of the trail. The other part of the route is made along the coast, finally arriving at the Vígia da Baleia, where there are excellent panoramics of the island of São Jorge, the town of São Roque do Pico, and of the ocean. With luck, you will even be able to see dolphins and whales.
Cabeço Vermelho Trail: This trail begins in Cabeço Vermelho, parish of Prainha de Cima. In respects to its geological, biological, and patrimonial characteristics, it is an interesting trail. Throughout the course of the trail, it is possible to observe indigenous species (Picconia azorica; Laurus azoric; Myrica faya; Juncus sp., and Festuca sp.), wine cellars, millstones, vineyards, and pastures. Finally, we will arrive to the famous natural pool of Prainha, called the “White Well” because of its limpid waters, where you will be able to refresh yourself. The other part of the route is made along the coast where we can find an old windmill, a lighthouse, the Ermida de São Pedro and the Canto da Areia (Sand Corner), designated as such because it has a small sand beach.
Hiking Trails Full Day:
Lava Trails: This trail links Sant´ana and Lajido. It is a very particular trail, namely because it is made through a lava field, with various form and designs, and through the World Patrimony of UNESCO, where we are invaded by the famous corrals (rock protections with semi-circular shapes located by the ocean, where vineyard cultivation was done) and vineyards as far as the eye can see. The magnificent panoramics of the island of São Jorge and Faial, which you can appreciate simultaneously, should also be mentioned. Throughout the course of the route, it is possible to observe migrating species, such as the tern (Sterna Hirundu) and calonectris (Calonestris dimedea borealis), along with an intense historical patrimony.
Voltas Path: The Voltas path takes place in Terra Alta, parish of Santo Amaro, and is a path true to its name, as it consists of trips around various indigenous species, luxurious vegetation shaped in the form of a tunnel, vineyards, and cultivated fields. Beyond all of this, this path is characterized by the innumerable steps in the path itself and the magnificent panoramics of the island of São Jorge, the ocean, and the mountain. Throughout the course of the route, you will have the opportunity to visit the Regional School of Artesanery, the Maritime Museum, the first naval dock of the Azores, and the Museum of Agrarian Utensils.
Mountain Biking Full Day:
Verdelho Route: Come live and appreciate nature in a mountain biking circuit and discover the arts of wine-making with a visit to the Wine Museum in the town of Madalena. This route, which goes until Lajido, is always made along the ocean, where you can appreciate the beauty and its vastness, the typical wine cellars of Pico, and Cachorra, with its beautiful rock sculptures created by sea and lava erosion. Following this is the route to Lajido, where you can try the famous aguardentes of Pico and the alembics that serve as part of the World Patrimony of UNESCO, finishing the route in Cabrito.
Bird Watching: Watching birds in their natural habitat is easily accomplished with the help of binoculars, which allow us to see details of their animal behavior. On the island of Pico, there is a great concentration of passerines, consumers of fruit and insects that are easily found in forests and even urban settings. You can also see birds of prey such as the milvus, the symbol of the Azores, along with maritime birds, such as the calonectris and the tern. The fact that there is such animal richness in Pico is precisely due to the easiness to nest in rocky shelters areas, such as crevices and small caves, which are capable of being transformed into a protected nest for the young birds. The vastness of aliment also contributes to the concentration of birds on the island. As you can see, life on the island of Pico is abundant in the sky, on land, and in the sea.
Moto 4 Full Day (4-8 people):
Lake Route: Come live and appreciate nature in a Moto4 circuit and discover the spectacular lakes of the island of Pico and the magnitude of its mountain. Part of the route is made through the Rede Natura 2000, where it is possible to appreciate a variety of indigenous species that are part of the natural reserve of Caveiro.
Mountain Route: Come live and appreciate nature in the Moto4 circuit and discover the spectacular magnitude of Pico Mountain and its magnificent landscape that spreads before your eyes. The route starts in the town of São Roque, climbing until the foot of the mountain through paths once used by inhabitants who would walk these routes, where you can take in views of São Jorge, Faial, and Graciosa simultaneously. Next, we will continue to the Lagoa do Capitão, a lake with an undeniable natural beauty. This is a route in which you will find an enormous variety of vegetation, from indigenous species to vineyards and agrarian terrains.
Mountain Climbing: The mountain of Pico, with 2351m in altitude, is the highest point of Portugal. To climb this mountain is to enjoy the vastness of the ocean, the magnificent view of the islands of the central group, the sunrise, among a series of sensations that are awakened by the magnitude of this mountain.
Donkey Ride: Come live and appreciate nature and take a tour through more secluded areas previously traversed by the people of Pico with a donkey, friendly animals that are used not only for work, but also as a method of transport. Relive these traditions with donkeys prepared as they historically were by the inhabitants of the island.
Speleology: Visits to various caves on the island.
Trip around the island: Trip around the island in a bus with various stops at interest points.
